About
Hi, I am Markus and I am trying to make a difference in the Mobile Application Space.
I currently run my own startup, Windmill Apps, creating apps for the iPhone, Android and Blackberry.
My first line of code I wrote at age 14, my last at age 28 when I discovered that managing a business is something I enjoy and seem to have some skill with. After graduating the University of Passau in Germany 1998 with a Master of Computer Science, I started my first company together with a good friend of mine (who is a programming god… another reason for me to do step back from writing code). We developed software and later webservices for large retailers who offered photo services for digital camera users in their shops and on their websites. For five years, we grew the company self financed & profitable to 27 employees, merged with a competitor in 2003 and sold it to HP in 2006 under the name of “Silverwire”, for those who like to google such things. When HP bought Silverwire, our Kiosk Software was installed in 25,000 retail shops worldwide and 15 Million photos were uploaded every month through our desktop and web clients for the sole purpose of getting printed as photos, posters, calendars or photobooks.
When a Fortune 100 company buys a startup, they make sure you stay engaged, so I enjoyed a three year period in my life working for HP as a Director, moving to San Diego and managing a team of 24 experts spread around the world from there. Those three years brought me a lot of insight into corporate life, my greencard and the amazing experience of working with some of the most talented people in the industry.
In August 2009 I decided to trade my cubicle and my conference-call infected corporate schedule for the life of a mobile app developer. Coming up with ideas and strategy, I am working with an outsourcing team in China that I know from my first company, taking a planned approach to build a sustainable business in the crazy Wild Wild West of Appstores, Approvals and all the other amazing things happening every day.
Life works best for me when I follow my natural tendency to be “german direct”, so if you can’t handle honesty, please go someplace else
I also like to put a different perspective on things as I learnt that such perspectives, although sometimes provocative, trigger those discussions everybody can learn from most.
